New Zealand's Christmas tree

Happy New Year everyone!

The Pohutukawa New Zealand's Christmas tree

Our neighbour’s tree is now in full flower - slightly late for Christmas day.
You might think that’s a strange thing to say, but this tree is a national symbol. Known as the pohutukawa it is also called the New Zealand Christmas tree, flowering as it does at Christmas time up in the North Island.

Here in Christchurch and further south, plants flower later and the pohutukawa is no exception. The pohutukawa is a member of the myrtle family.

Looking out from our sitting room it is such a beautiful sight to see.
